Winterfest Boat Parade 2026: Date, Route, Tickets & 10 Best Places to Watch

  • Posted on

Once a year, the waterways of Fort Lauderdale turn into a 12-mile light show. The Seminole Hard Rock Winterfest Boat Parade, now in its 55th year, sends a fleet of boats covered in holiday lights from the New River up the Intracoastal Waterway, and organizers say it draws more than one million spectators. The question every visitor asks is the same: where should we watch it?

We live in Fort Lauderdale, and this is the guide we would give a friend: the official facts, ten good places to watch, how to time your arrival and what to bring. Every date, rule and closure time below comes from the official Winterfest website, and the restaurant and hotel picks come from Visit Lauderdale; all sources are linked at the bottom.

When and where is the Winterfest Boat Parade 2026?

The 55th annual parade runs on Saturday, December 12, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m. Boats stage on the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale, along the docks west of the Stranahan House toward the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. A pre-show of non-motorized vessels starts at 5:30 p.m.

From the Stranahan House, the parade travels east along the New River to the Intracoastal Waterway, then turns north and finishes at Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach. The whole route is about 12 miles. Because the parade moves north, its arrival time is staggered: the official site says you can expect to watch for about 2.5 hours from one location. The farther north you sit, the later the first boats reach you.

Where are the 10 best spots to watch the boat parade?

Here are ten places, grouped by area: downtown on the New River, the Las Olas and beach stretch, and the quieter northern stretch of the Intracoastal. Each one comes from the official Winterfest site or from Visit Lauderdale's spectator guide. Restaurants and hotels set their own parade-night plans, so call ahead and reserve early.

Downtown on the New River

1. The Riverwalk along the New River (free)

The boats line up on the New River downtown, between the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and the Stranahan House, and the parade starts here at 6:00 p.m. The public Riverwalk lets you see the decorated boats up close before they leave and catch the 5:30 p.m. pre-show. Good for: families with young children who want an early night, since you see the start and can walk to dinner on Las Olas Boulevard afterward.

2. The Riverside Hotel, Las Olas Boulevard

A historic downtown hotel on Las Olas Boulevard with views of the New River, listed by both Winterfest and Visit Lauderdale. Being early on the route, it sees the boats soon after the start. Good for: a classic downtown evening; ask the hotel about its parade-night plans.

Las Olas and the beach stretch

3. The official Parade Viewing Area, Las Olas Intracoastal Promenade Park (ticketed)

The organizers call it "the best way to see the parade." It is at 80 Las Olas Circle, by the Intracoastal near Fort Lauderdale beach. Gates open at 4:00 p.m. with entertainment, food and drinks for sale and photos with Santa, chairs are provided for every guest, and the parade arrives at about 6:30 p.m. Tickets: $40 adults, $30 children 12 and under, free for 3 and under (electronic tickets). Good for: families who want a guaranteed seat and restrooms.

4. Hyatt Centric Las Olas

Visit Lauderdale lists this hotel for its views of the Intracoastal Waterway. Good for: a hotel stay or drinks with a view; check with the hotel for parade-night access.

5. Ocean Prime, by the Las Olas Bridge

A two-story restaurant next to the Las Olas Bridge with outdoor terraces, per Visit Lauderdale. It is a short walk from the official viewing area. Good for: a dinner reservation with a view; book well ahead.

6. Coconuts

Near Fort Lauderdale beach with Intracoastal views, according to Visit Lauderdale. Good for: a casual seafood dinner on the water.

7. Bahia Mar Fort Lauderdale Beach, a DoubleTree by Hilton

On Fort Lauderdale beach next to Bahia Mar Marina, listed by Visit Lauderdale. Winterfest's boater guide refers to "the turn at Bahia Mar" on the route. Good for: groups staying by the beach.

8. Pier Top at Pier Sixty-Six

Visit Lauderdale highlights this lounge 17 floors up with 360-degree views. Good for: seeing the lights from above rather than at water level.

The northern stretch (calmer, later)

9. Shooters Waterfront, Mastro's Ocean and Bokampers

Visit Lauderdale lists these three waterfront restaurants close to each other, with front-row views. Because the parade travels north, the boats reach this stretch later than downtown. Good for: groups who want to eat and watch in the same place. Reserve early.

10. Blue Moon Fish Co., Kaluz and Houston's

Visit Lauderdale places these three farther north on the Intracoastal, toward the finish at Lake Santa Barbara in Pompano Beach. Good for: a later, calmer viewing away from the biggest downtown crowds.

Watching for free with a chair: Visit Lauderdale notes that if you don't get tickets, you can watch from along the Intracoastal with a lawn chair. That tip is for free public spots only: outside chairs are not allowed in the official viewing area, where seating is provided. Choose public land, follow local signs and arrive early.

How early should you arrive, and how do you get there?

  • Official viewing area: gates open at 4:00 p.m. The organizers suggest arriving early, because there is entertainment from 4:00 p.m.
  • The Las Olas Bridge is locked open during the parade. If you are going to the official viewing area, the organizers say to be on the east side of the Las Olas Bridge by 6:00 p.m.
  • Parking: the Las Olas Parking Garage is next to the viewing area, and the organizers warn that parking is very limited on parade night. They encourage ridesharing.
  • Restaurants on the route: Visit Lauderdale recommends reservations.
  • Timing farther north: because the parade is staggered, northern spots see the first boats later than 6:00 p.m. Plan dinner around it.
  • Stay on one side of the Intracoastal. Bridges open for the parade and close to cars for long stretches (see the table below), so crossing by car is slow all evening.

Which bridges close, and how does that affect traffic?

Winterfest publishes approximate times when each bridge closes to cars and reopens. Times can shift with traffic and the parade's pace.

Bridge Closes to cars Reopens
7th Avenue (New River) on demand on demand
FEC Railroad about 5:30 p.m.* about 7:20 p.m.*
Andrews Avenue (New River) 5:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m.

Oakland Park Boulevard 7:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m.
Commercial Boulevard 8:00 p.m. 11:00 p.m.

*Winterfest notes the FEC railroad bridge schedule may change. For the official viewing area, the organizers say to be on the east side of the Las Olas Bridge by 6:00 p.m.

Can you watch the parade from your own boat?

Yes, and many locals do. Winterfest's boater guide lists these places to anchor a spectator boat: the mouth of the New River, the New River Cut south of the turn at Bahia Mar, the northeast side of the Las Olas Bridge, Sunrise Bay and western Lake Santa Barbara, where the parade turns around. Birch State Park is a no-anchor zone, and the New River has no-anchor zones.

  • City docks close to non-parade boats at 8:00 a.m. on parade day.
  • The New River (Davie Boulevard to Mark 9) closes to boat traffic at 2:30 p.m., and the Triangle at 4:40 p.m.
  • The Intracoastal closes south of Oakland Park Boulevard at 4:50 p.m. and north of it at 5:50 p.m.
  • If you are between Oakland Park and the Triangle, be anchored by 4:00 p.m.
  • Several law enforcement agencies patrol the route, along with trained civilian "control boats." You may not anchor in front of a control boat.

What should you bring, and what is not allowed?

For the official viewing area, Winterfest lists these rules and tips: bags are searched and you may pass metal detectors; outside chairs, bottles, coolers and pets are not allowed (seating is provided, and only service dogs may enter); food and drinks are sold inside; and cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover) work at designated ATMs. Lost children and lost items go to the Guest Services booth.

  • Fireworks are part of the parade. Bring ear protection for small children, and leave pets at home (Winterfest also asks you not to leave them in cars).
  • Dress in layers. The sun sets around 5:30 p.m., and evenings by the water can feel cool. Winterfest suggests a hat, sweater or poncho if needed.
  • Bring any medication you need.
  • Accessibility: the official pages don't list accessibility details, so contact Winterfest before you buy tickets if you need accessible seating.

Can you watch the Winterfest parade online or on TV?

Yes. The official site says the parade is livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook on December 12, 2026. WSVN 7 airs a Winterfest TV special on Friday, December 18, 2026 (7:00–8:00 p.m.), with more airings on WSVN 7 and ABC Miami 18 on December 25 and January 1. The organizers note that air times are subject to change.
